Group Policy Preferences - Usage

When to use group policy preferences?

Common uses for group policy settings
Screenshot of the Default Domain Policy. The Preferences node is shown with Windows Settings and Control Panel Settings. Examples, such as Applications, Folders, Power Options, and Internet Settings, are highlighted.
Preferences are divided into Windows Settings and Control Panel Settings. Here are some common of the most popular ways preferences are used.
    • Map network drives for users.
    • Configure desktop shortcuts for users or computers.
    • Set environment variables such as mapping the TEMP variable to C:\Temp.
    • Map printers.
    • Set power options.
    • Configure Start menus.
    • Configure data sources.
    • Configure Internet options.
    • Schedule tasks.

Precedence. If you configure the same setting through a policy setting and a preference, the value of the policy setting always applies.
