What is RSAT?

You can administer AD DS from a server that's not a domain controller, by using Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT). RSAT is a feature that can be installed from the Add Roles and Features Wizard.

You can also administer AD DS from a client computer by using RSAT. Different RSAT versions are available based on the client operating system.

• RSAT for Windows 8, RSAT for Windows 8.1, and RSAT for Windows 10 can used to administer Windows Server 2012 R2.
• RSAT for Windows 7 cannot be used to administer Windows Server 2012.

After you download and install RSAT, use the Turn Windows Features On or Off to enable the tools that you want to use.
